DIAMOND JUBILEE
As we approach the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the report of the last such occasion may be of interest.
Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee was celebrated in Woodchester at a fete on 22 June 1897. According to the Woodchester History, the day began with the pealing of bells and the firing of cannon. For luncheon, 600 sat down in marquees in the Villa Field, presided over by the Lord of the Manor, W. Leigh Esq. The afternoon was given over to sports and was followed by tea for the children who were each given a Diamond Jubilee mug and a medal. Games were continued until dusk set in.
